Dishwasher not cleaning properly
Tools: old toothbrush, toothpick or thin wire, screwdriver, flashlight · Materials: dishwasher cleaner or citric acid, rinse aid
Steps
- Remove the lower rack and lift out the filter assembly (twist and pull on most models); wash it in hot soapy water with a brush.
- Unclip or unscrew the spray arms and poke every hole clear with a toothpick; rinse and refit, checking they spin freely.
- Run the hottest cycle empty with a dishwasher cleaner or a cup of citric acid on the top rack to dissolve grease and scale.
- Top up rinse aid and check the salt if your machine has a softener — cloudy glasses are usually scale, not dirt.
- Load with the dirty side facing the arms, nothing blocking the detergent door, and run the hot tap at the sink before starting so the first fill is hot.
Stop and call a pro if
- the spray arms do not turn during a cycle — the circulation pump or motor
- the water is not hot at the end of a cycle — the heating element
- the detergent door does not open, or the machine shows an error code
What a pro does that you can't
An appliance technician replaces a failed circulation pump, heater or dispenser, and judges whether a 10-year-old machine is worth it against a new one.
DIY cost: $5–15 for cleaner and rinse aid
