Movers vs deep cleaning: Sequencing a smooth move
A move requires both movers and a deep clean — but the order, timing, and which property to clean make a huge difference in stress and cost. Plan it right.
Moving is unique among home services because it requires two completely different specialists working in a precise sequence. Movers handle the heavy logistics: packing fragile items, disassembling furniture, loading and driving the truck, and reassembling at the destination. Deep cleaning crews handle the empty-property cleaning that lease and sale agreements typically require — scrubbing baseboards, cleaning inside cabinets and appliances, washing windows, and getting carpets and floors back to move-in condition. The ideal sequence has both at both ends of the move: cleaning the destination property *before* movers arrive (so you're moving into a clean space and can place furniture without working around dirt), then movers, then a final move-out clean of the old property *after* movers have removed everything. Trying to clean an occupied space is essentially impossible — cleaners can't reach behind furniture, mop a floor with boxes on it, or get the inside of a cabinet that's full of dishes. The most common mistake is booking the deep clean for the wrong day; both should be scheduled at least 2–4 weeks in advance, especially during peak summer moving season.
Movers vs Deep cleaning
| Feature | Movers | Deep cleaning |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Hire movers when: you have furniture or appliances too heavy to safely move yourself, you're moving more than a single small apartment's worth of belongings, you need professional packing for fragile items, or you're moving long-distance. Local movers charge $80–$150/hour for a 2–3 person crew with truck. A typical 2-bedroom local move runs $400–$1,200. Long-distance moves are priced by weight and distance: $2,000–$8,000+. | Hire deep cleaning when: your lease requires a move-out clean to get the deposit back (most do), the new home wasn't professionally cleaned by sellers, you're moving in with allergies and need carpets and surfaces sanitized, or you simply want a fresh start in a spotless space. Move-out cleans run $200–$500 for a 1,500 sq ft home, or $300–$800 for larger homes. Add carpet cleaning ($100–$300) and window washing ($150–$350) for a full reset. |
