Grout Turning Black or Dark in the Shower
Tools: grout brush, spray bottle, rubber gloves, grout saw (if regrouting), small applicator brush for sealer · Materials: oxygen bleach or a 1:10 chlorine bleach solution, penetrating grout sealer, pre-mixed grout for small repairs
Steps
- Ventilate, then spray the grout with oxygen bleach solution and leave it for 15–30 minutes.
- Scrub along the lines with a grout brush, rinse, and let the shower dry overnight with the door open.
- If lines stay dark, the stain is in the grout body: scrape out the top 2–3 mm with a grout saw and press in fresh grout, wiping tiles clean as you go.
- After 48–72 hours, apply a penetrating sealer to every grout line and let it cure as the tin says.
- Squeegee after showers and run the fan; sealed, dry grout stays light for years.
Stop and call a pro if
- grout is missing or crumbling in long runs — water is getting behind the tiles
- tiles sound hollow or move when pressed
- the black is on the silicone bead rather than the grout, and it returns after replacing the bead
What a pro does that you can't
A cleaning or tiling professional regrouts whole walls with matching colour, replaces failed silicone properly, and finds water getting behind the tiles before the wall board fails.
DIY cost: $10–35 for cleaner, grout and sealer
