Gutter installation vs carpenter: Who fixes fascia and drainage?

Rotting fascia boards and failing gutters often go together. Learn whether you need a gutter installer, a carpenter, or both to fix the problem properly.

Gutters mount directly to the fascia board — the long, flat board that runs along the roof edge behind the gutter. When gutters fail (leaking, sagging, pulling away), the underlying fascia often has water damage too. This creates a chicken-and-egg situation: you can't install new gutters on rotten fascia, but the fascia won't stop rotting until proper gutters direct water away. A gutter installer handles the gutter system itself: sizing, hanging, sealing joints, and routing downspouts. A carpenter handles the fascia board and the structural wood behind it (rafter tails, soffit framing). When both are damaged — which is common — the proper sequence is: carpenter replaces fascia first, then gutter installer mounts new gutters to the fresh wood. Some gutter companies handle minor fascia repairs (replacing one or two boards), but extensive rot or structural framing damage requires a carpenter. Getting both quotes before starting ensures the work happens in the right order.
