AC Installation vs Electrician

Compare hiring an AC installation specialist versus an electrician for cooling system projects. Learn which professional you need and when you need both.

AC installation (performed by HVAC technicians) and electrical work are two distinct licensed trades that frequently intersect on cooling projects. An AC installer handles the mechanical and refrigerant side: sizing the system (Manual J load calculation), setting the condenser pad and outdoor unit, running refrigerant lines, connecting the evaporator coil to the air handler, charging the system with refrigerant, testing airflow and temperatures, and commissioning the thermostat. An electrician handles the electrical infrastructure: running a dedicated 240V circuit from the main panel to the outdoor unit (required for central AC and most mini-splits), installing a disconnect switch within sight of the condenser (code requirement), upgrading the panel if the existing panel doesn't have capacity for a 30–60 amp AC circuit, and wiring the thermostat if it requires a new cable run. On many residential AC installations, the HVAC company handles both scopes — their technicians are often dual-licensed or employ in-house electricians. But in some jurisdictions, only a licensed electrician can pull the permit for the electrical portion, and some HVAC companies subcontract the electrical work. The total cost for a central AC installation is $3,500–$7,500, of which the electrical portion (dedicated circuit + disconnect) typically runs $500–$1,500. A mini-split installation is $3,000–$6,000 including electrical. If you're getting quotes, ask whether the HVAC quote includes the electrical work or if you'll need to hire an electrician separately.
