Smart doorbell not ringing
Tools: phone with the doorbell app, screwdriver, multimeter (optional) · Materials: a plug-in chime if the mechanical chime is not compatible
Steps
- Test each layer separately: press the button and check the app's event log — if the press is logged but nothing rings, it is a chime or notification setting; if nothing is logged, it is power or Wi-Fi.
- Open the phone's settings and make sure the app is allowed to notify, is not battery-optimised to sleep, and that 'do not disturb' is off; then press the button again.
- In the app, check that the indoor chime is enabled and the chime type (mechanical or digital) matches the one on your wall.
- For a wired doorbell, look at the chime box: the small power module or bypass the maker supplied must be fitted, or a mechanical chime will stay silent.
- Power-cycle the doorbell by switching off its breaker for a minute or removing the battery; after an outage the doorbell often needs to rejoin Wi-Fi.
- Have someone press the button while you watch the LED: a spinning or amber light means it is not connected, so fix Wi-Fi first.
Stop and call a pro if
- the transformer or the wiring at the chime is warm, buzzing or the insulation is cracked
- the doorbell has no power at all with the breaker on — a wiring fault behind the wall
- everything is configured and connected and the press is still not logged — the unit is faulty
What a pro does that you can't
A smart-home installer checks the transformer voltage under load, fits the correct chime module or replaces an incompatible chime, and sets up notifications and Wi-Fi so it works every time.
DIY cost: $0 for settings; $30–50 for a plug-in chime
