Security Camera Night Vision Is Blurry or Washed Out
Tools: microfibre cloth, soft brush or broom, ladder, lens cleaner or isopropyl alcohol · Materials: anti-spider or peppermint spray, a small IR illuminator if the camera's own LEDs bounce
Steps
- Look at the night image first: a milky glow all over is reflection off the lens cover; bright streaks are a web or a raindrop; one bright corner is a nearby surface bouncing infrared.
- Brush away webs from the housing and the wall around it, then clean the dome or lens cover with lens cleaner and a microfibre cloth — no paper towels.
- Spray the housing edge and the wall around it with an anti-spider spray monthly; spiders love the warmth and the insects the IR attracts.
- Check the mount: if the camera looks along a wall, soffit or eave within a metre, angle it a few degrees away so the IR does not bounce back.
- Lower the IR intensity in the app if there is a setting, or turn the LEDs off and add a small external IR illuminator placed away from the lens.
- At night, make sure no porch light or window is inside the frame; the camera exposes for the bright spot and loses the rest.
Stop and call a pro if
- the fog is inside the dome — the seal has failed and the camera needs replacing under warranty
- the camera needs re-mounting at height where a ladder cannot stand safely
- the picture is blurry by day as well — the lens or sensor is at fault
What a pro does that you can't
A smart-home installer repositions the camera off reflective surfaces, adds external illuminators for a clean night image, and replaces a fogged unit.
DIY cost: $5–15 for cleaner and spray; $20–40 for an IR illuminator
