Slow bathtub drain
Tools: screwdriver, plastic drain snake, needle-nose pliers, flashlight · Materials: baking soda and vinegar, hair catcher strainer for afterwards
Steps
- Remove the overflow plate (two screws) and the drain stopper — many lift out or unscrew anticlockwise.
- Push the plastic snake down the drain and down the overflow, twist, and pull; hair comes out on the barbs.
- Pick out what the snake misses with needle-nose pliers.
- Pour in baking soda then vinegar, wait 15 minutes, and flush with hot water.
- Refit the stopper and overflow plate and fit a hair catcher over the drain.
Stop and call a pro if
- the tub drains slowly and the toilet gurgles when the tub empties
- water backs up into the tub when the washing machine or sink drains
- the stopper linkage inside the overflow is corroded or stuck
What a pro does that you can't
A plumber clears a clog deeper than a hand snake reaches, replaces a seized stopper assembly, and checks the vent stack if the drain gurgles.
DIY cost: $5–15 for a snake and a hair catcher
