Flooring installation vs interior painting

Both are major interior renovations that transform a room. Compare costs, timelines, and the correct sequence when doing both.

Flooring installation ($3,000–$12,000 for 1,000 sq ft) is the bigger, more disruptive project: furniture removal, old floor demolition, subfloor prep, and 2–5 days of installation plus potential off-gassing time. Interior painting ($2,000–$6,000 for 1,500 sq ft) takes 2–4 days and mainly requires furniture shifting to the room center. Both dramatically change a room's appearance. The critical rule if you're doing both: paint first, then install flooring. Painting involves drips, roller splatter, and ladder contact with floors. Even with drop cloths, paint on brand-new floors is a frustrating and potentially costly accident. After painting, install flooring with the walls already done, then add trim and touch-up paint at the very end. If budget forces you to choose one: painting gives the bigger visual impact per dollar because it covers the most visible surface area (walls are 3–4x the floor area). Flooring has higher ROI at resale (70–80% vs 60–70% for paint).
