Do You Need a Permit for Outdoor Lighting Installation?

Sometimes. Low-voltage landscape lighting (12V/24V) is typically permit-exempt because it runs on a transformer plugged into an existing outdoor outlet. However, line-voltage (120V/240V) outdoor lighting that involves new circuits, trenching for underground conduit, or connections to the main panel requires an electrical permit. Permanent fixtures on structures may also trigger a building permit.

Do you need a permit?

Sometimes

What triggers a permit

  • Running new 120V/240V circuits from the main panel to outdoor fixtures
  • Trenching or boring for underground electrical conduit
  • Installing permanent light poles or bollards requiring a concrete foundation
  • Adding outdoor lighting to a structure in a historic district or HOA-governed area

Country-by-country detail

Verenigde Staten

Sometimes

Typical fee
$50–$300

In the US, low-voltage landscape lighting (12V/24V) connected via a transformer to an existing GFCI-protected outdoor outlet is generally permit-exempt. However, any line-voltage outdoor lighting work — adding new 120V/240V circuits, installing dedicated outdoor panels, or trenching for underground conduit — requires an electrical permit per the National Electrical Code (NEC). Post lights, parking area lighting, and security flood lights hardwired to the panel all trigger permits. Municipalities with dark-sky ordinances may impose additional restrictions on fixture type, lumens, and shielding.

Polen

Rarely required

Typical fee
PLN 0–300

In Poland, oświetlenie zewnętrzne (outdoor lighting) on private property is generally classified as roboty budowlane niewymagające pozwolenia ani zgłoszenia (construction work requiring neither a permit nor notification) under the Prawo budowlane, provided it uses the existing electrical installation and does not involve konstrukcje budowlane (building structures). Running new obwody elektryczne (electrical circuits) to outdoor fixtures requires an electrician with uprawnienia SEP G1. Installing lampy uliczne (street-style lamp posts) or oświetlenie na słupach (pole-mounted lighting) with concrete foundations may require a zgłoszenie. In areas covered by a Miejscowy Plan or within a strefa ochrony konserwatorskiej (heritage protection zone), prior approval from the konserwator zabytków may be required.

Nederland

Rarely required

Typical fee
€0–€150

In the Netherlands, tuinverlichting (garden lighting) on private property is generally vergunningvrij (permit-free) under the Omgevingswet when using low-voltage systems or connecting to an existing buitenstopcontact (outdoor outlet). Line-voltage buitenverlichting (outdoor lighting) that requires new bekabeling (wiring) from the meterkast (fuse box) must be installed by an erkend installateur following NEN 1010. In a beschermd stadsgezicht (protected cityscape) or monument environment, visible fixtures on the gevel (facade) may require an omgevingsvergunning. Some gemeenten enforce lichthinder (light pollution) regulations that restrict brightness and direction of outdoor fixtures.

Spanje

Sometimes

Typical fee
€50–€200

In Spain, outdoor lighting on private property is generally covered by comunicación previa or declaración responsable for minor electrical work. New alumbrado exterior (outdoor lighting) that involves running new circuitos (circuits) from the cuadro eléctrico requires a Boletín Eléctrico (CIE) issued by an instalador autorizado and filed with the autonomous community's industry department. Lighting on a fachada (facade) in a casco histórico (historic district) typically requires a licencia de obra menor and approval from the comisión de patrimonio. Municipalities may enforce ordenanzas de contaminación lumínica limiting fixture brightness and direction.
