Smart lock not respondingLeiden, Zuid-Holland

A smart lock that won't respond to app commands, keypad input, or auto-lock/unlock triggers can leave you locked out or — more concerning — leave your home insecure if the lock fails in an unlocked state. Smart locks communicate over Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, or Zigbee, and a failure to respond usually falls into one of four categories. First and most common: dead or critically low batteries. Most smart locks run on 4 AA batteries and last 6–12 months, but cold weather, heavy use, or a firmware bug that keeps the radio active can drain them faster. Many models chirp or flash red when batteries are low, but if you miss the warning the lock goes unresponsive. A fresh set of batteries restores function immediately. Second: connectivity loss. Wi-Fi–based locks need a stable signal at the door (often the farthest point from the router), and if the signal drops the lock won't respond to remote commands via the app — though it should still respond to the physical keypad or Bluetooth at close range. Z-Wave/Zigbee locks depend on a hub (SmartThings, Hubitat, etc.), and if the hub is offline or the mesh network has a gap at the door, the lock appears dead in the app. Third: a motor or mechanical jam. Smart lock motors are small and low-torque by design (for battery life), and if the deadbolt is misaligned with the strike plate, the door has swollen from humidity, or the bolt is physically obstructed, the motor stalls and the lock reports an error or simply stops responding. Fourth: a firmware or pairing issue — after a firmware update or a hub migration, the lock may need to be re-paired or factory-reset to restore communication. A smart-home installer can diagnose the root cause, check battery health, verify radio signal strength at the lock, adjust the deadbolt-to-strike alignment, and re-integrate the lock with the home automation system.
