Pool Pump Making Loud Grinding Noise — Torrevieja, Valencian Community

When a pool pump transitions from its normal low hum to a loud grinding, screeching, or growling noise, the cause almost always traces to one of three components inside the motor housing. The most common culprit is worn-out motor bearings — the sealed ball bearings that support the motor shaft degrade over time from heat, moisture intrusion, and chemical exposure, eventually allowing metal-on-metal contact that produces a harsh grinding sound. The noise typically starts intermittently and worsens over several weeks. A second common cause is debris lodged in the impeller: a small stone, twig, or broken piece of skimmer basket that passes through the pump basket and wedges between the impeller vanes and the volute housing, creating a rhythmic scraping or rattling on every revolution. A third possibility is a failing capacitor on single-speed motors — the start capacitor or run capacitor can degrade and cause the motor to struggle during startup, producing a loud buzzing or humming before the motor catches. Less commonly, a bent motor shaft (from running dry) or a cracked impeller causes vibration-induced noise. A pool technician can diagnose which component has failed, replace bearings or the entire motor assembly, clear impeller debris, or swap a bad capacitor, restoring quiet operation and proper flow rate.
