Cupping (boards curling up at the edges into a concave shape) and crowning (bulging up in the middle) are moisture problems, not flooring defects. Hardwood expands when it absorbs moisture and contracts when it dries — when one side absorbs more than the other, the boards distort. The number-one cause of cupping is a moisture source from below: a leaking dishwasher, a damp crawlspace without a vapor barrier, a slab that wasn't properly sealed, or a leaking pipe under the floor. Less commonly, cupping happens during humid summers in homes without air conditioning. Before any flooring repair makes sense, you must find and fix the moisture source — a plumber for leaks, a contractor for crawlspace encapsulation, or an HVAC tech to address humidity.
