Brown, black, or yellowish scorch marks on an outlet faceplate or the surrounding wall indicate that an electrical connection inside the box is arcing or overheating. Loose wire terminals, backstab connections that have worked free, or an oversized load on a 15-amp circuit are the most common causes. This is a serious fire hazard—arcing faults can ignite insulation or wall framing.
