Flooring installation vs deck building

Both involve building or replacing surfaces you walk on — but the skills, materials, and costs are very different. Compare indoor flooring installation with outdoor deck construction.

Indoor flooring installation ($3–$12 per sq ft installed, or $2,000–$10,000 for a typical project) covers hardwood, laminate, luxury vinyl plank (LVP), tile, or carpet. Work includes removing old flooring, subfloor prep (leveling, moisture barriers), installation, transitions between rooms, and trim/molding. Most flooring projects take 1–3 days per room. The installer needs precision cutting, pattern matching, and subfloor knowledge. Deck building ($15–$35 per sq ft, or $4,000–$15,000 for a 200–400 sq ft deck) is structural outdoor construction: footings, posts, joists, decking boards (pressure-treated, composite, or hardwood), railings, stairs, and often requires permits and inspections. A deck project takes 1–3 weeks. The builder needs carpentry, concrete, and code compliance skills. While both are 'surface' work, they rarely overlap in practice — a flooring installer typically doesn't build decks, and a deck builder doesn't lay LVP. For projects that include both (like a home renovation that extends outdoor living space), you'll hire two separate contractors.
