How to Become a Concrete Mason in Nederland

The Dutch construction sector is robust, driven by ongoing housing shortages, infrastructure maintenance, and climate adaptation projects (flood barriers, water management structures). Concrete workers (betonwerkers) are in steady demand. The Netherlands relies heavily on precast concrete (prefab beton) for efficiency and quality control in its dense urban construction.

Training is available through the MBO (middelbaar beroepsonderwijs) system at levels 2–4. Registration at KvK is required for self-employed masons. Union collective agreements (cao) set wage floors for construction workers — concrete masons typically earn €16–€25 per hour as employees, with self-employed contractors charging €40–€70 per hour. Decorative concrete for residential patios and garden projects is a growing niche. Dutch building standards (NEN) and environmental requirements are strict, so masons must understand concrete sustainability — recycled aggregates, low-carbon cements, and waste management are increasingly important in the Netherlands.
